Product Description

Originally released more than a decade ago, the WowWee Roboraptor is a modern classic. The brand’s flagship model, it is the first biomorphic robot. This robot may have been usurped by newer models in recent years, such as CHiP The Robot Dog and their Fingerlings range, but the Roboraptor still offers hours of fun for both adults and children.

WowWee Roboraptor - Truly Terrifying

At two foot long, this is in an impressive-looking toy. Made with distinctive grey and white stripes, it looks every part the high-end item, which is essentially what this dinosaur is. Another key to its popularity is that it comes in at the lower end of the price scale when it comes to robots. However, it is at the higher end when it comes to RC models, the Roboraptor has enough impressive functions to keep everyone entertained.

Technology

  • RC Handling : The remote control mimics the Roboraptor in styling and colour, and resembles that of a standard games console controller. Easy to use, this toy is aimed at ages 8+ although its cumbersome nature makes it generally suitable for bigger children and adults. By using the controls you can get the robot to do all sorts of things and even set its mood, choosing options such as ‘cautious’ or ‘playful’.

  • On the Rampage : When setting it to ‘roam’ its infrared noise and sound sensors help it navigate around the room. Whilst roaming, the Roboraptor may bite things, inspect findings and avoid obstacles, but its movements are somewhat unwieldy and not as smooth as later models or more high-end robots. The biggest drawback of this raptor is that it doesn’t ‘learn’, unlike more luxury models; it won’t get to know you over time and it can really only respond to stimuli or be controlled. The next biggest drawback is the sound. Whether this dino is eating, roaring, snuffling or even purring, its volume can’t be controlled or even silenced. Whilst this may mean children can’t get away with playing with it in their bedrooms at night without parents knowing, it also means many parents may become so frustrated with the noise they simply put it away!

Verdict: Should I Buy It?

That said, the WowWee Roboraptor is a lot of fun. For real enthusiasts, however, the upgraded Roboraptor Blue or Roboraptor X may be a better choice. For those looking for a lower cost option for the whole family to enjoy, though, this beast offers plenty of entertainment. If you're interested in the idea of an electronic companion for your little one, but perhaps one which is not a prehistoric monster, perhaps consider something along the lines of FurReal Friends Bootsie or Snuggles My Dream Puppy, which are slightly more cuddly.
