Very comfortable on long walk-ins

I don't have a car, so I was looking for a light and inexpensive pad I could cycle/hike to crags with, and I can confirm this one works perfectly.

It's one of the most comfortable pads I've encountered, especially in its price range (though your mileage may vary depending on your body shape). Last week I carried it on a 6 mile round trip to a remote crag with only a minor amount of shoulder pain/chafing right at the end (and that was only due to wearing a backpack on my front at the same time) - something I'm really impressed with, as other pads I've tried this with began to hurt after as little as 2 miles. In terms of cycling short distances, it's light and comfortable enough to carry in both sitting and standing positions, and doesn't force me to be too hunched over, though I can't comment on longer rides (e.g. of several miles) yet.

The pad doesn't have a waist strap (only a chest strap) though it would benefit from one (for cycling, or when walking with it in strong winds), but this is easy enough to improvise with another piece of webbing if you have some. I haven't encountered the strap-detachment issue another reviewer mentioned, but possibly the design has changed slightly since then. I've seen no wear on stitching so far, and the surface has stayed surprisingly clean.

In terms of protection, it's certainly better than not having any and I've been thankful I bothered to carry it up with me, but be aware it is quite a hard and thin pad, and I wouldn't feel especially confident jumping from more than 1.5-2m onto it unless paired with other pads. I don't generally climb highballs so this is not really an issue for me, but something to consider if you do.

Overall it's been perfect for what I wanted it for, and I would definitely recommend if you're like me and crags are a bit of a mission for you to get to.

Great pad

Grivel have done a great job of this crash pad, light, but very effective, I have hit it a couple of times now and it is just like new.

Fab :)

It's family-suitcase size when folded, so good for carrying. Nice to land on. Very durable. Solid - it's been out a couple of times now and the only sign is that it's a little muddier. Its surface is easily wipeable if you want to keep it shiny. Doubles as a great seat :)

Grivel Boulder mat

A solid little mat which fits squarely in a car boot and carries well, perfect for explorative bouldering in Scotland. Stiff and good for circuits as much as low sitters.

A great first bouldering mat

I bought this about a week ago to take on a bouldering trip to the lakes. It's only seen a couple of uses so I can't comment on how hardwearing it is, but everything else about it is fantastic.

For starters it looks great, but it's also got a few nifty features which make it very functional. The gear loops on the back are a really clever touch, you can clip your chalk bag and shoes to them eliminating the need to take a bag, or you can even attach a small day sack. The buckles that keep the mat closed when you're carrying or storing it seem pretty chunky and the straps on the front that let you carry it like a rucksack work well and are comfy (ideal for those long walk-ins.)

The greatest feature of all however is the price, this mat is a real bargain, and in particular a great starter mat for the (like me) beginner boulderer.

A couple of small niggles, firstly this isn't the thickest mat going, so if you're planning any highballing you might want to look again. Secondly while the shoulder straps are comfy and solid when they are in use, they tend to detach from the mat when you're not using them which can be a pain if you take the mat off your back for a second to grab some water etc.

However these are pretty small niggles for the price and I'd wholeheartedly recommend this mat.

Happy crushing!
