Owned many a cycle backpack in the past but Osprey is now my go-to brand for all of my rucksack needs, cycling, hiking, day packs and travelling. The Raptor 14 is the perfect companion for any cycle adventure. From external helmet attachment, rear light capability to removable toolkit roll, this a well-made, well-planned bag.
Perfect day ride back pack, in every way. Sits well and great back ventilation. I'm not a fan of frame and saddle packs (you always have to take them off when you leave your bike) and this is great for tools etc and your water. A lot of thought has gone into this product indeed. Well worth the price it is.
Used this for the first time today on a 13 mile run no bounce and the straps weren't even tight had 2 ltrs of water a waterproof jacket a pair of running tights gels wallet phone keys and I didn't notice any weight on my back the shoulder straps sat well zero chaffing anywhere and nothing even felt like it would chaff in fact if it wasn't for the noise of the water swishing about in the bladder I would of forgotten I was wearing it this is one of those things you buy that is just perfect
Thoughtfully designed pack for cyclists or minimalist walkers/runners. Superb use of quality materials with function and form uppermost. I have a number of osprey products and it is the first brand I go to as its obvious the care that is taken to produce superlative equipment.
Osprey has become my go-to brand for packs, they clearly put a lot of thought into their gear and they shave weight by reducing the sizes of buckles, strapping and use lightweight materials throughout their range. Some of the materials are so light that they give cause for concern that they will rip but man, they are plenty tough. The Raptor pack is well built and thought out. I use this for cycle commuting and when doing longer cycles, it swallows plenty of gear. Starting at the bottom there is a waist strap that is pretty clever in that there are pockets made from stretchy material that sit at your hips, these are ideal for stashing your phone and/or energy gels. Moving up there is a zipped pouch at the base of the pack which holds the tool roll, this can take multi-tools, repair kit etc and there is enough room in there to hold a spare tube. It doesn't quite take a mini pump, if the pack was an inch wider it would make all the difference.
Above the tool roll is a handy little slot that seems perfectly made to hold a flashing LED. Mine fits perfectly. Behind this slot is a pouch held shut by a clip, this is stretchy and can be used for gloves, hat etc. This pouch and the light slot are on a panel that is held to the body of the pack by clips, you can stow a thin jacket behind this panel. Oh, behind the pouch is a side zip with a wee pocket inside with a keyclip and space for wallet. Up top is small zipped pocket with enough room for sunglasses etc. Outside of this is a plastic fitting held on by bungee cord. This can be pulled out, slotted through your cycle helmet and will pull it back in to hold it against the pack. Very clever.
The main pocket in the pack is fairly roomy but I wish it was an inch wider, it can almost take a magazine but not quite. The tool rool in the bottom also intrudes into the main pouch which diminishes it a bit in size. Finally, the back support system has a weird kink at the bottom which seems to pinch the main pocket and rob it of some room. Finally, between the main pocket and your back is a zipped pocket that contains the water bladder. This thing rocks, it fits well, has a clever zip which encloses the tube and there is a magentic fastening to keep the hose handy. The bladder itself is not a cheapo add-on but is really well made. This pack is excellent but falls short of being perfect as the main pouch feels just a little bit constricted and bulkier items (such as a stove) feel a little jammed when shoved in. If Osprey could loosen the main pouch a weee bit this would be a perfect pack. Still, its a great effort and would be useful for running as well as cycling. The pack is supremely comfortable and can be worn for hours, the mesh at the back does help to stop your back from getting soaked with sweat.
